MUXES, Mexico

Darina Guerra Carballo (R), 32, sitting with her mother Rosalia (L) and her older muxe sister Andrea Guerra Carballo (C), at a traditional birthday party of a close family friend in Juchitán de Zaragoza, Mexico on October 4, 2018. Darina is a muxe from Juchitán de Zaragoza, Mexico. She works as a dressmaker and lives with her boyfriend Jesús Gómez Reyes, 29. Having an older sibling who is a muxe made life easier for her. “Deep down, I feel like a woman but I recognise I am a muxe,” she says. She has been dressing as a woman for a decade. “My dad still calls me by my real name. He doesn’t make me do men’s work but he can’t bring himself to call me by a girl’s name.” Born men, but often living as women, muxe occupy a traditional role in indigenous Zapotec culture that goes beyond identifying as gay.
